Amsterdam Takeaway Thoughts & Tips

Some random notes and tips to make your visit enjoyable.
  • Do not be afraid to ask. Most Dutch speak good English. Do not be afraid to ask for directions. Say “Thank You” after.
  • Do not be shy to ask someone to take your picture. My fave targets are fellow travelers. I offer to take their picture in return.
  • The Dutch are friendly people. Just stay away from the bicycle lanes. When you hear a bell or a “tsk” sound, step aside.
  • In fastfood chains, clean as you go. Waiters do not clean up after you. When in doubt, watch the locals.
  • Amsterdam have the BEST fries. With mayo please. Eat them everyday.
  • I highly recommend getting the IAmsterdam card. It covers a lot of places and gives you the flexibility to choose another destination (e.g. I chose the windmill over the museums)
  • Do not take pictures in the Red Light District. DO NOT.
  • If you are meeting with a relative or friend in Europe, consider getting a simcard. I got Lycamobile for € 15 which comes with a loaded amount already.

  • Do not forget to swipe you OV-chipkaart. They impose a fine if you forget to swipe.
  • In riding trams, some doors are for entrance only. The exit is on another door. When you hop on  a tram, check if you will exit the same door or another door.
No exit here
  • Most traditional hotels/hostels in Amsterdam have no elevators. Consider that when booking a room which is located on the 5th floor.
  • Bring loose change for toilets and tips.
  • Explore their supermarket.
I love Albert Heijn's waffles!
  • Photos are not allowed in museums. You’ll get shouted at.
  • Taking pictures of the menu is also discouraged. I don’t know why, but I got a “No photo, no photo” moment when I took shots of their menu.
  • Water costs around €0.80 per 1L bottle.
  • You can get a decent meal for under € 10.
  • A decent sit-down meal will cost around €15-20. I didn’t want to spend a lot of time eating lunch. I prefer doing more touring and having a long sit-down dinner instead.
  • You can try M in various coffeeshops. I chose to just try wholesome coffee.

Enjoy Amsterdam! My next stop: Cologne, Germany.
